While instrumental skill is certainly an asset...
...it is definitely not music theory.
The Beatles couldn't even read sheet music.
Yet, they created numerous albums that went down in history,
including the masterpiece *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band*.
How were they able to do that?
Why was this possible?
It was because they had access to Abbey Road Studios
at any time, allowing them to play their instruments,
record, and craft their songs.
And then there was George Martin.
Beatles producer George Martin received a formal academic education
at a music and drama school.
After working for a time as an oboist, he joined EMI,
where he met the members of The Beatles.
When Paul or John would compose a song on guitar or piano and say,
"We want to expand it in this sort of way,"
George Martin was able to propose exactly how to do it.
Furthermore, he could write the scores
for orchestral arrangements and bring them to life.
That is why he is known as the "Fifth Beatle."
